The translation of this collection of Old French lais into Old Norse was commisioned by the Norwegian king Hákon Hákonarsonar (1204-1263). The reign of king Hákon has been generally regarded as a "great age" of Norwegian history, with relative prosperity, considerable political power and a rich cultural life.
This edition of Strengleikar is supplied with English translation of the Old Norse text, a general introduction, and introduction and commentary to each lai.
