How to Make Use of the Archives

The National Archives [Riksarkivet] and the regional state archives [Statsarkivene] contain records regarding most matters registered or processed by a governmental authority at the local or central level. The most frequent users of archival material include the following:

  • Genealogists
  • Researchers and university students
  • Journalists
  • Individuals interested in history
  • Lawyers

In addition to the above user categories, there are other groups seeking documentation and certification of matters that are of particular importance to the individual user or to be used for legal purposes. Most frequently requested is documentation on the following matters:

  • Property matters
  • Personal information regarding the individual user
  • Personal information on ancestry
