There are many questions that the letters do not answer. What happened to the men on board The Mercator? Where had they been travelling? What had they been trading with? When and where did the boat sink? And what happened to the family back home?

There might be answers in archives and letters both in Norway and England. If you find any information - please let us know! (Send us a mail:mapr@arkivverket.no).  Here is a clue: In the archives in Trondheim, there was an envelope with the address to John’s son Charles among the letters. Charles was in charge of John’s company back in London. His address in 1816 was:
