The founder of the Bergen School (Bergensskolen) of Meteorology and the father of our modern weather forecasting, Vilhelm Bjerknes, was born 150 years ago 14. March 1862. The Regional State Archives of Bergen marks this day with some digital retrospective glances at Bjerknes and the Geophysical Institute (Vervarslinga på Vestlandet) in Bergen.
Vilhelm Bjerknes arrived in Bergen in 1917 as professor of the new Geophysical Institute. Here he could continue with his research in finding an effective/reliable method of forecasting the weather. This would be of great importance for farmers and fishermen, especially in this post-war period with increasing hunger. He writes so himself in the Festschrift to the institute.
The Festschrift "Vervarslinga på Vestlandet 25 år" marks the institutes 25 years in 1943. The Regional State Archives of Bergen has digitised the book and made it available online . A Norwegian article on the Festschrift is also available.
