The book series "Fra Amerika til Norge. Norske utvandrerbrev" ("From America to Norway. Norwegian emigrant letters") is now complete. Volume VII covers the period 1905–1914. The series as a whole starts in 1838, and all parts of the country are represented.
Here we meet Norwegian emigrants in America. Via the letters home they express their feelings and experiences regarding the emigration. Thus, we come pretty close to motives and reactions the way the emigrants themselves experienced them. Letters are often seen as a literary genre, but these letters are also scenes from the great drama that emigration involved. We get an insight into the reasons for the break-up from their home towns, knowledge of the often strenuous journey, and information about the building of Norwegian societies in the American mid-west.
Fra Amerika til Norge VII is published by the Norwegian National Archives in cooperation with Solum publishing house. Editor is professor emeritus Orm Øverland, University of Bergen. The price of the book is NOK 398, and it is available in book stores or directly from the publishing house.
