In 2009 the National Archive launched a separate service for viewing the digitised probate material, based on the probate material that had already been microfilmed. This material consists of both the magistrate’s and the bailiff’s probate protocols from the middle of the 17th century till the beginning of the 19th century, but also includes the clergy’s probate protocols from the 18th century. Up until the beginning of the 19th century the army governed its own probate management, and this material has to a lesser extent been digitised..

As the probate protocols can be difficult to navigate, several state archives are writing an index for the protocols.
