1885 it was decided that the censuses should take place in years ending with zero. So the next census was scheduled to 1890. Still a census was arranged in 1885 covering only the cities.

The census was supposed to take place between 31. December 1885 and 1. January 1886. Everyone, including temporarily absentees, residents and visitors, were to be registered in the census lists where they were located that night.

The original census lists are kept in the different Regional State Archives

Census completed

The transcribed and searchable verison of the 1885 census is published for all available cities in Norway. Please notice that for Bergen there are records missing. These will be added as soon as they are ready. Currently, there are ca 6900 persons missing from the data for Bergen.

The data that we have moved from the old internet site of the Digital Archives to the new, is unaltered, apart from Moss and Horten in which several thousands records that were missing have been added.
